" Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. " - James 4:9-10
verse 9 puzzles me.
i always thought that God turns our mourning into dancing,
so why would James tell us to change our joy to gloom?
a mystery, indeed.
verse 10 offers a clue:
it has something to do with humbling ourselves before the Lord -
something i am in the process of learning since i failed my 2nd driving test.
so we should all grieve, mourn and wail?
what does that mean???
the opposite of that would equate as: pride = joy and laughter
thinking back in terms of driving,
i somehow felt the key to a humble approach would be closer to a mournful one.
i felt that a TP would most likely pass a humble but safe driver, rather than a proud one that would be a potential hazard on the roads.
and the indicator of a humble driver is one who is mournful and gloomy?
well, at least not over-confident, flippant, or gleeful.
so then,
let me learn to demonstrate humility through my behaviour.
and with the Lord, i know he will definitely lift me up!
MY APPLICATION: pay attention to the behaviour i exhibit on my next driving test. may i learn what it is to be truly HUMBLE.
